Mae: In 1938, the Federal government
established the Federal National Mortgage
Association (Fannie Mae) to expand the
flow of mortgage money by creating a secondary
market. It is a private company.
Freddie
Mac: Created in 1970, the Federal
Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie
Mac) is a stockholder-owned corporation chartered
by Congress to increase the supply of funds
that mortgage lenders can make available to
homebuyers.
Ginne
Mae: In 1968, Congress established
the Government National Mortgage Association
(Ginnie Mae) as a government-owned corporation
within the HUD.

Oversight (OFHEO) works to ensure the
capital adequacy and financial safety and
soundness of Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac.
